Survey: Few Americans Prefer Real-life Rough Sex

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. – Despite the popularity of balls-to-the-wall gonzo porn and BDSM-themed “mommy porn” novels like Fifty Shades of Grey, more Americans prefer nice-and-easy real-life encounters to rough sex.

That’s one of the tidbits uncovered by Adam & Eve’s most recent survey of adult Americans’ sexual practices and attitudes.

When the adult products retailer asked more than 1,000 American men and women 18 years of age or older whether they prefer rough or gentle lovemaking, 40 percent responded “sensual.” Only 8 percent of men and 5 percent of women indicated they prefer rough sex.

Although they may prefer a lighter approach most of the time, the majority of Americans won’t turn down a sheet-tangling romp, according to the survey. Regardless where their preferences lie, 51 percent of men and 54 percent of women said they enjoy sex along a spectrum of energy levels, depending upon their mood at the time of the encounter.

Adam & Eve’s resident sexpert said she wasn’t surprised by the results, especially in the post Fifty Shades world. As in most other aspects of life, sexuality exists on a continuum.

“Adults should be able to explore their erotic boundaries and try new things within their comfort zones,” Dr. Kat Van Kirk said. “With the popularity of Fifty Shades of Grey, light bondage and experimentation have become much more acceptable. From playful spanking and hair pulling to serious restraints and safe words, there is an entire spectrum of rough sex that can be enjoyable and healthy.”

Previous surveys in the series have investigated Americans’ attitudes about homemade porn, bed-hopping, paying for online content and condoms in adult entertainment.
